Areas of Research Expertise

Space Exploration and Observation

Arizona is home to world-renowned observatories, state-of-the-art telescopes, and leading university departments and centers carrying out research in astronomy, planetary and space sciences. Our observational, theoretical and space astronomy programs are ranked No. 1 in the country by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL)

The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory is one of the most productive research organizations in the nation and has a worldwide reputation in spacecraft missions, laboratory-based research, theory, and astronomical observations. Recently, LPL led in the Phoenix Mars Mission, which was launched in August 2007 and landed on the polar region of Mars in May, 2008.

Astronomy

The Steward Observatory is one of the world's leading astronomy research organizations and home to the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab, which fabricates the largest telescope mirrors in the world. Steward scientists perform research using expertise ranging from theoretical astrophysics to astrobiology. They are currently building the world's largest telescope and help create major telescopes including Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Climate, Environmental, Water & Energy Sustainability

As the leading university in the world with expertise in water, The University of Arizona's Water & Environmental Sustainability Program (WESP) is uniquely positioned to use its strengths to support university, industry, and government collaborations in research, technology, education, and outreach to resolve water and environmental resource challenges.

Bioscience and Biotechnology

The UA bioresearch program carries out leading edge interdisciplinary research, provides crucial technology platforms and clinical trials infrastructure, and tackles complex and pressing problems of critical importance today. Through its research programs in bioengineering, drug discovery, genome structure and function, quantitative biology, and the neural basis for memory changes, UA scientists address cancer, diabetes, heart, neurological and respiratory diseases, cognition and aging; develop new diagnostic tools; improve yield and nutritional quality of crops; and develop plants as sources of pharmaceuticals.
