Creating a Bi-national Innovation Region

In May 2013 President Obama and President Peña-Nieto announced a Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation and Research. Since that time, work has begun with a diverse set of partners on both sides of the border to bring top education, private sector, and civil society stakeholders together to advance shared goals of increasing educational exchange between Mexico and the United States.

As part of its support for the U.S.-Mexico Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation and Research, the University of Arizona is hosting a Bi-national Seminar on “Creating an Innovation Region” in Tucson, Arizona from June 8-9, 2014 in parthership with the UA/Miraval Institute. The University of Arizona has secured the presence of Dr. John Kao, a noted innovation authority and former Harvard Business School professor, who has worked extensively on national innovation strategies with countries, states and cities worldwide. Dr. Kao will facilitate the meeting which will include a deep dive* at UA Biosphere 2 on how to ensure a North American region of innovation, particularly on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The University of Arizona is inviting 30 top government, academic and private sector leaders from the United States and Mexico to participate in the seminar with Dr. Kao. The goal is a frank discussion on how the two countries can work together to ensure that a focus on innovation remains at the top of bilateral policy efforts aimed at creating a region of prosperity. This seminar marks the transition from exploration to action and will be a deep dive focused on planning, commitments and execution.

This seminar will immediately precede a broader gathering of the Working Group on Research and Innovation of the Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation and Research, also hosted by the University of Arizona.

* Deep dives are immersive, facilitated sessions designed to explore large, open-ended issues. The approach involves assembling a diverse group of stakeholders, employing diverse facilitation techniques and using graphic recording to capture ideas. Deep dives originated in the design community as a way of describing the immersive, “en charrette” process that leads to new product or process design. Dr. Kao has used his approach to deep dives with such diverse constituents as the governments of Singapore, Finland, Australia and the United States.
